Canonical Definition

Cogito Ergo Contribuo is complete as a proof when seven independent verification standards have each established what they were built to establish — and when the verified causal evidence of what genuine formation produced in others is portable across every institutional context where existence must be established.

The proof is binary: either the chain is complete or it is not. There is no partial proof of conscious existence.

I. The Verification Problem

The problem this protocol addresses is not philosophical. It is operational.

After the Fabrication Threshold, behavioral observation can no longer reliably establish conscious agency. Every behavioral signal of conscious existence — reasoning, creativity, professional expertise, relational engagement — can now be produced without conscious substrate. Behavioral observation was always a proxy for the underlying reality of conscious agency. That proxy has become structurally insufficient.

The specific operational problem: how does a specific conscious being establish, to any institution that requires it, that they genuinely exist as a conscious agent who has genuinely caused lasting capability in others — in a way that is verifiable, portable, and unfakeable?

Cogito Ergo Contribuo Protocol specifies the answer.

Not the philosophical argument for why this proof is necessary. Not the definition of what conscious contribution is. The operational chain through which the proof is established, what conditions must be met for the proof to be complete, and what the proof guarantees and explicitly does not guarantee.

II. The Operational Chain

The proof of conscious existence through verified contribution requires seven independent verification conditions to be established sequentially — each building on what the previous established — and then carried as a complete portable record.

Step 1: Genuine Formation — BUILDS

GenuineFormation.org

Genuine formation must be established at the source before any transmission claim can be verified. Without genuine formation, there is nothing genuine to transmit. A cascade that originates in Frictionless Formation produces signals without the underlying architecture that genuine transmission requires.

What Step 1 establishes: that the source carries genuine cognitive architecture — built through genuine irreversible encounter with genuine difficulty — that makes genuine transmission possible.

What Step 1 does not establish: that the formation transmitted. Only that it exists to transmit.

Step 2: The Edge — REVEALS

TheEdge.is

Genuine formation must have been tested at the structural condition where familiar frameworks fail — where the difference between genuine formation and its performance becomes undeniable. Formation that has never reached The Edge has never been distinguished from its simulation under normal operational conditions.

What Step 2 establishes: that genuine formation was tested against conditions that reveal its presence or absence.

What Step 2 does not establish: that the formation persisted over time. Only that it held under structural pressure.

Step 3: Temporal Persistence — ESTABLISHES

PersistoErgoDidici.org

Genuine formation in the source must persist independently — tested at minimum T+90 after acquisition, with all assistance removed, in genuinely novel contexts the original acquisition never covered.

What did not persist in the contributor cannot have genuinely transmitted.

What Step 3 establishes: that the source formation is genuine — that it holds over time without continued support, that it transfers to novel contexts, that it is architecture rather than performance.

What Step 3 does not establish: that the formation transmitted to others. Only that it persisted in the source.

Step 4: Causal Transmission — VERIFIES

CascadeProof.org

Genuine formation must have genuinely transmitted to specific verifiable others — verified through the four-component pattern that only genuine causation produces:

  • Independent persistence: specific people demonstrate capability independently, T+90 minimum after the formation encounter ended
  • Propagation without the source: those people independently enabled further people without the original contributor directing or being present
  • Temporal durability: capability holds across time in genuinely novel contexts
  • Branching multiplication: the pattern branches across generations the original contributor never directly reached

What Step 4 establishes: that genuine formation genuinely transmitted — that the causal pattern in the world matches what genuine formation transmission produces.

What Step 4 does not establish: what kind of formation transmitted, or how it propagated across the complete network. Only that the causal transmission occurred.

Step 5: Semantic Specification — SPECIFIES

MeaningLayer.org

What transmitted must be specified — the architectural depth, domain type, and nature of the capability that genuinely transferred. Without semantic specification, causal verification establishes that something transmitted without establishing what.

What Step 5 establishes: that the transmission was of a specified type — genuine understanding rather than information delivery, architectural change rather than surface capability.

What Step 5 does not establish: the complete topology of what transmission produced across the network. Only what was transmitted.

Step 6: Causal Mapping — MAPS

ContributionGraph.org

The complete causal topology must be established: every specific person whose capability genuinely changed, every path through which genuine formation propagated, the full branching structure of what the formation produced in the world.

What Step 6 establishes: the complete verified record of what conscious contribution produced — who it reached, how it propagated, what compounded.

What Step 6 does not establish: that the verified record is portable across institutional boundaries. Only that it exists.

Step 7: Portable Carrying — CARRIES

PortableIdentity.global

The verified causal evidence must be carried across every institutional boundary that would otherwise require it to be reconstructed from zero. The proof must travel with the person — independent of any platform or institution, accessible in every context where it must be presented.

What Step 7 establishes: that the complete verified record is portable — that it travels with the conscious being whose existence it proves, and can be presented to any institution that needs to answer the question behavioral verification cannot answer.

What Step 7 does not establish: the final proof itself. Only that the verified evidence is complete and portable.

Step 8: The Proof — PROVES

CogitoErgoContribuo.org

When all seven steps have established what they were built to establish, the final statement becomes possible:

Cogito Ergo Contribuo. I contribute, therefore I exist.

Not as claim. As verified pattern in the world — in specific people, across time, established through independent instruments, portable across every context where existence must be proved.

III. Proof Completion

When the proof is complete:

All seven prior steps have been independently established. The verified causal evidence is complete, specified, mapped, and portable. The four-component cascade pattern has been verified in specific identified people across documented time. The semantic specification identifies what genuinely transmitted. The Contribution Graph maps the complete topology. Portable Identity carries the complete verified record.

When the proof is not complete:

Any single step that has not been independently established renders the proof incomplete. The chain is the proof. Remove any link and the conclusion cannot be established.

Specific incompleteness conditions:

Source formation unverified: If genuine formation in the source has not been independently established through Genuine Formation and The Edge standards, the cascade may have originated in Frictionless Formation. The proof cannot be established.

Temporal persistence unverified: If source formation has not been tested over time without assistance, it may be performance that has not persisted. The proof cannot be established.

Causal transmission unverified: If the four-component cascade pattern has not been established in specific verifiable others, transmission is claimed but not proved. The proof cannot be established.

Semantic specification absent: If what transmitted has not been specified, the causal verification establishes that something transmitted without establishing what it was. The proof cannot be established in its complete form.

Contribution topology unmapped: If the complete causal topology has not been documented, the proof is fragmentary. The proof cannot be presented in its complete form.

Evidence not portable: If the verified causal evidence is not carried in portable form, the proof exists in a specific context but cannot be presented across institutional boundaries. The proof cannot function as a portable existence proof.

IV. Verification Guarantees

What this protocol guarantees:

When all seven steps are complete, the proof establishes that a specific conscious being genuinely caused genuine formation in specific verifiable others — formation that persisted independently, propagated without the source, and compounded across generations.

The structural pattern that the complete proof establishes cannot be fabricated retroactively. Constructing it backward requires traversing the genuine formation encounters it represents, in real people, across real time.

The proof is falsifiable: if a complete cascade pattern were verified and genuine formation demonstrably had not occurred, the framework would fail. Structurally, this falsification is impossible — the pattern and the formation are structurally inseparable — but the framework makes no claim to philosophical certainty. It claims structural robustness.

What this protocol explicitly does not guarantee:

Philosophical certainty about consciousness. The protocol does not resolve the hard problem of consciousness. It does not establish with philosophical certainty that the person who established the proof is conscious. It establishes that they produced the specific structural pattern that only genuine consciousness-to-consciousness formation produces.

Completeness of all contributions. The protocol verifies what was documented and mapped. Genuine contributions that did not produce verifiable cascade patterns, or whose cascades were not documented, are not captured in the proof. The proof is not a complete account of conscious existence — it is a verified account of what was established.

The absence of the proof is not evidence of absence of consciousness. A person who cannot establish Cogito Ergo Contribuo may be genuinely conscious and may have genuinely contributed. The protocol verifies a specific type of verifiable causal pattern. It makes no claim about consciousness or contribution that falls outside its verification.

Permanence of the proof without maintenance. The verified causal evidence must be maintained in portable form. A proof that is not carried in Portable Identity is a proof that resets at institutional boundaries.

V. What Does Not Satisfy Cogito Ergo Contribuo

Self-reported impact. Claims by contributors about what they caused, however detailed, do not constitute verified evidence. The proof must reside in specific verifiable other people whose capability changed in ways consistent with the four-component pattern — not in the contributor’s account of what they produced.

References and testimonials. Third-party assertions that someone was helpful, effective, or impactful do not establish the cascade pattern. They establish that someone is willing to make an assertion. The proof requires the pattern, not the assertion.

Credentials and institutional recognition. Formal recognition that requirements were satisfied does not establish that genuine formation occurred, persisted, transmitted, or compounded. Credentials verify institutional exposure. The proof requires causal transmission.

Incomplete chains. Verified formation transmission to one person that did not independently propagate does not establish the complete proof. The four-component pattern requires branching multiplication across independent nodes.

Unverified temporal persistence. Formation transmission claimed but not tested at T+90 or later, with assistance removed, in novel contexts, has not established the temporal dimension of the proof.

The Death Test — Ultimate Verification

The strongest available confirmation: does the cascade pattern persist when the contributor can no longer assist — permanently?

When the original contributor is no longer present in any form, and the capability cascade continues propagating, branching, and multiplying without them — the proof is as strong as it can be. The contribution created genuine formation that outlives the contributor.

If the cascade collapses when the contributor becomes permanently unavailable, the relationship was dependency rather than genuine formation transmission. The proof does not hold.

Genuine formation outlives its source. Dependency collapses when the source ends.
